The Woman
and the Dragon

“And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony.” Revelation 12:11

John saw signs in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, a child caught up to God, and a dragon cast out. The war that began before the world continues, and the faithful still win through the Lamb.

Hand-drawn doodle map of a winding path through the sky and earth: a woman in sunlight with a crescent moon and twelve stars, a gray scribbled shadow with stars falling, a baby lifted up into light, a woman walking toward a tent in the wilderness, faceless white figures with shields, a gray storm cast down to earth, people sharing testimony beside a lamb, and a family walking together toward a city.

Before you begin

The story in brief

John saw “a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars.” “A great red dragon” whose tail “drew the third part of the stars of heaven” waited to devour her child, but “her child was caught up unto God,” and she “fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God.” The Joseph Smith Translation explains that the woman is “the church of God” and the child is “the kingdom of our God and his Christ.”

“There was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon,” who “prevailed not” and was “cast out,” “that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan.” “They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony.” Now the dragon makes war with those “which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.”

Who’s who

  • The woman: the Church of God
  • The dragon: Satan
  • Michael: who led the faithful
  • The Lamb: Jesus Christ, by whose blood they overcame
