GOSPEL: Don’t Be Evil

The Book of Mormon teaches that opposition is part of mortality. “For it must needs be, that there is an opposition in all things” (2 Nephi 2:11). Lehi did not teach this to make life feel bleak; he taught it so his family would understand agency. We recognize light because there is darkness, healing because there is hurt, and righteousness because there are real choices. The existence of opposition means our decisions matter.

Lehi then offers one of scripture’s great declarations of freedom: people are “free to choose liberty and eternal life, through the great Mediator of all men,” or to choose captivity and death (2 Nephi 2:27). The gospel does not ask us to drift through life hoping we end up somewhere good. It invites us to choose deliberately—to repent, serve, forgive, honor covenants, and protect what is holy.

“Don’t be evil” is not a claim that disciples never make mistakes. We all do. The miracle of the gospel is that the Savior makes return possible. When we choose poorly, we can turn around. Through Jesus Christ, repentance is not humiliation; it is a path back to light, truth, and joy.

This does not require a dramatic audience. The most Christlike choices are often unseen, made in private, and repeated until goodness becomes part of who we are.
