Born in 1807 in Connecticut, Woodruff was a miller by trade before joining the Church in 1833. He became an Apostle in 1839 and spent more than five decades in the Quorum of the Twelve. His missionary career was legendary. During one year of missionary service in Britain, he traveled thousands of miles, preached hundreds of times, baptized hundreds of converts, helped publish Church materials, and even endured multiple mobs. In other words: Woodruff did not believe in taking it easy.

But perhaps his greatest superpower was his journal. Woodruff meticulously recorded the people, sermons, revelations, travels, and struggles of the Restoration. His journals fill thousands of pages and remain an essential source for understanding early Latter-day Saint history.

He was also deeply devoted to temple work. He became the first president of the St. George Utah Temple, helped advance temple ordinances, and later championed genealogical work. As Church President from 1889 to 1898, he led during a pivotal era, including the 1890 Manifesto, the dedication of the Salt Lake Temple in 1893, and the organization of the Genealogical Society of Utah.
