A short history of the area
The name Bahía Blanca means “White Bay,” referring to salt around the shores of the bay. The city grew after a railway connected it with Buenos Aires in 1884, helping it become an important grain and port center. Puerto Belgrano, Argentina’s largest naval base, was built nearby between 1898 and 1902.
The Church here
- 1923Wilhelm Friedrichs and Emil Hoppe, two German immigrants, began preaching the gospel in Buenos Aires.
- 1925Elder Melvin J. Ballard dedicated South America for the preaching of the gospel and helped establish the South American Mission in Buenos Aires.
- 1938Elders Ben E. Clark and Reed J. Chalk began preaching the gospel in Bahía Blanca and nearby towns.
- 1939The Bahía Branch was organized in February.
- 1966The first stake in Argentina was created in Buenos Aires.
- 1980The Bahia Blanca Mission was organized.
- 1986The Buenos Aires Argentina Temple was dedicated.
- 2015A second temple in Argentina was completed in Córdoba.
- 2018A temple to be built in Salta was announced.
