A short history of the area
British forces attacked the city in 1806 and 1807, but Buenos Aires repelled the second invasion. The May Revolution began in 1810, and Buenos Aires became the seat of the Argentine government when it was federalized in 1880. Today, it is known for its theaters, bookstores, football clubs, and tango.
The Church here
- 1923Wilhelm Friedrichs and Emil Hoppe, two German immigrants, began preaching the gospel in Buenos Aires.
- December 1925Apostle Melvin J. Ballard dedicated South America for the preaching of the gospel and established the South American Mission.
- 1935The South American Mission divided into the Argentine and Brazilian Missions.
- 1940sForeign missionaries were withdrawn from Argentina, and local members assumed leadership of the branches and mission organization.
- 1946Foreign missionaries returned to Argentina.
- 1966A stake was created in Buenos Aires.
- 1986The Buenos Aires Argentina Temple was dedicated.
- 2015A second temple in Córdoba was completed.
- 2018A third temple, to be built in Salta, was announced.
