A short history of the area

Resistencia is a city in northern Argentina and the capital of Chaco Province. The city is part of the Gran Chaco region, a broad, mostly flat area where missionaries eventually expanded Church work.

Missionaries were sent north into Salta, the Gran Chaco, and Resistencia as Church leaders began expanding beyond Buenos Aires. Resistencia is also connected with outreach among Indigenous communities in the Chaco region.

1923Wilhelm Friedrichs and Emil Hoppe, two German immigrants, began preaching the gospel in Buenos Aires.
1925On December 6, Elder Melvin J. Ballard and other Church leaders arrived in Buenos Aires to begin missionary work in South America. The South American Mission was established that month.
1935The South American Mission was divided into the Argentine and Brazilian missions.
1940sForeign missionaries were withdrawn from Argentina, and local members led the branches and mission organization.
1946Foreign missionaries returned to Argentina.
1950sA building program provided local meetinghouses and training for young men serving on building missions.
1962The North Argentine Mission was organized as the Church expanded into northern Argentina.
1966A stake was created in Buenos Aires.
1986The Buenos Aires Argentina Temple was dedicated.
