A short history of the area
Little Rock played an important role in the history of school desegregation. In 1957, the Little Rock Nine integrated Little Rock Central High School, and President Dwight D. Eisenhower sent the 101st Airborne Division to protect the students. The city is also home to the Arkansas River Trail, the Little Rock Zoo, and the Clinton Presidential Center.
The Church here
- 1835The first Latter-day Saint meeting in Arkansas is held under the direction of missionaries Wilford Woodruff and Henry Brown.
- 1857Parley P. Pratt, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, is murdered near Van Buren, Arkansas.
- 1875Missionaries baptize nearly 90 people in the Des Arc area.
- 1877About 27 families and 125 people from the Des Arc congregations move to Utah by wagon.
- 1969The first stake in Arkansas is organized in Little Rock, with Dean C. Andrew as president.
- 1975The Arkansas Little Rock Mission is formed, with Richard M. Richards as president.
- 1980s and 1990sDavid A. Bednar serves as a prominent Church member in Arkansas while teaching at the University of Arkansas and serving as a stake president.
- 2019The Church announces plans to construct a temple in Bentonville.
