A short history of the area
The settlement was named for Sir Thomas Brisbane, governor of New South Wales from 1821 to 1825. Brisbane became the capital of the newly separated Colony of Queensland in 1859. Today it is known as the River City and is the center of South East Queensland.

- 1840William Barratt introduced the restored gospel to Australia after immigrating there as a young British convert.
- 1844The first Latter-day Saint branch in Australia was organized.
- 1851A Church mission was organized in Australia.
- 1904The first Church-owned meetinghouse in Australia was dedicated in Brisbane.
- 1960Stakes were organized in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne, among the first stakes organized outside North America.
- 1984The Sydney Australia Temple, the first temple in Australia, was dedicated.
- 2003Temples existed in Adelaide, Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane, in addition to the Sydney temple.
