A short history of the area

English settlement of Bridgetown began on July 5, 1628, under Charles Wolverstone, who brought 64 settlers. The settlement grew around the Careenage, a waterway that divides the city.

A bridge built over the Careenage led to the name Bridgetown, after Sir Tobias Bridge. Bridgetown became a city in 1824, and Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011.

1978The first convert baptism in Barbados took place after a convert from Scotland shared his faith with friends.
September 1979The Puerto Rico San Juan Mission opened Barbados to missionary work.
October 1979The first congregation in Barbados was organized in Christ Church.
1983Seminary and institute were operating in Barbados.
1988Elder Marvin J. Ashton dedicated the islands of the West Indies for missionary work.
July 2015The Barbados Bridgetown Mission was created through a realignment of the West Indies Mission and the Dominican Republic Santo Domingo East Mission.
