About the mission

The Bolivia Cochabamba North Mission is based in Cochabamba, the fourth-largest city in Bolivia. The city lies in a fertile valley surrounded by high mountains, including Tunari.

Spanish is the mission's primary language. Cochabamba also has strong Quechua cultural roots, reflected in local names, foods, and traditions.

A short history of the area

The Cochabamba Valley has been inhabited for thousands of years. Indigenous peoples who lived in the area included the Tiwanaku, Tupuraya, Mojocoya, Omereque, and Inca. The Inca turned the valley into a major agricultural center, with large stores of maize in the surrounding hills.

The Spanish founded the city of Villa Real de Oropesa in 1571. Cochabamba later supplied food and wood to mining towns, especially Potosí. Today it is known as the City of Eternal Spring, the Garden City, and La Llajta, a Quechua name meaning town.

The Church here

  1. 1963Maria, the first convert in Bolivia, was baptized in Cochabamba on August 3.
  2. 1964Missionaries arrived from the Andes Mission in November, and branches were organized in Cochabamba and La Paz in December.
  3. 1967Desiderio Arce Cano became the first Bolivian to serve a mission for the Church.
  4. 1977The Bolivia Cochabamba North Mission was organized on July 1.
  5. 1982The Bolivia Santa Cruz Mission was renamed the Bolivia Cochabamba Mission after being relocated to Cochabamba.
  6. 2000President Gordon B. Hinckley dedicated the Cochabamba Bolivia Temple.
  7. 2024Missionaries in the Bolivia Cochabamba North Mission gave out more than 2,000 copies of the Book of Mormon during a five-day Light the World effort.
