A short history of the area
In 1893, the site was chosen for a new capital of Minas Gerais. Cidade de Minas was inaugurated in 1897 and renamed Belo Horizonte in 1906. The city was planned to replace Ouro Preto as the state capital.

- 1930sChurch services shifted from German to Portuguese during a government ban on German in public life.
- 1940The first Portuguese translation of the Book of Mormon was published.
- 1966The first stake in South America was organized in São Paulo.
- 1978Large numbers of people began to be baptized in Brazil, and wards and stakes became established throughout the country.
- 1988The Brazil Belo Horizonte Mission was organized.
- 2009The Brazil Belo Horizonte and Brazil Belo Horizonte East Missions were consolidated into one Brazil Belo Horizonte Mission.
- 2017The Brasília Brazil Temple was announced on April 2 as Brazil's 10th temple.
