A short history of the area
Paraná became an independent province in 1853, and Curitiba became its capital. European immigrants, including Poles, Italians, Germans, and Ukrainians, helped shape the city's culture and economy. The city also became known for its carefully planned transit system and large amount of green space.
The Church here
- 1928Missionaries began preaching in southern Brazil in response to requests from German Church members living there.
- 1930sAnti-German sentiment led to a government ban on German in public. Church services soon changed to Portuguese, and some German-language materials were destroyed.
- 1940The Portuguese translation of the Book of Mormon was first published.
- 1959The Brazil South Mission was formed from the lower three states of Paraná, Santa Catarina, and Rio Grande do Sul. The split took place in September.
- 1966The first stake in South America was created in São Paulo.
- 1978 onwardWards and stakes became established throughout Brazil, and temples operated or began construction in many major cities.
- 2013The Brazil Curitiba South Mission was created on July 1.
- 2017The Brasília Brazil Temple was announced on April 2 as Brazil's 10th temple.
