A short history of the area
Today, Goiânia is known as the Capital of the Cerrado and the spring capital. It has a tropical wet and dry climate, large green areas, and a population of more than 1.4 million people. In 1987, the city became the site of a serious radiation accident involving a stolen medical caesium-137 source.
The Church here
- 1928Missionaries began preaching in southern Brazil in response to requests from German members living in the country.
- 1930sAnti-German sentiment led to restrictions on German in public life. Church services soon shifted to Portuguese, and some German-language materials were destroyed.
- 1940The first Portuguese translation of the Book of Mormon was published.
- 1966The first stake in South America was created in São Paulo.
- 1978The São Paulo Brazil Temple, the first temple in South America, was dedicated.
- 1998The Brazil Goiânia Mission was created from parts of the Belo Horizonte, Brasília, and Ribeirão Preto missions.
- 2017The Brasília Brazil Temple was announced as Brazil's 10th temple.
