A short history of the area
The city grew rapidly during the Amazon rubber boom in the late 19th century. Today, Manaus is a major city in the rainforest and is near the meeting point of the Negro and Amazon rivers.

- 1928Missionaries began preaching in southern Brazil after German Church members requested help.
- 1930sChurch services in Brazil shifted to Portuguese after the government banned German in public life.
- 1940The first Portuguese translation of the Book of Mormon was published.
- 1966The first stake in South America was created in São Paulo.
- 1978Hundreds of thousands of people began to be baptized in Brazil from this year onward.
- 1988The first stake in Manaus was organized.
- 1990The Brazil Manaus Mission was organized.
- 2024The Brazil Manaus South Mission was organized on July 1 from a division of the Brazil Manaus Mission.
