A short history of the area
The 1929 stock market crash brought down the coffee-based economy. In the 1970s and 1980s, the Pró-Álcool program encouraged sugarcane production and helped create a new economic boom. Ribeirão Preto is now known as the National Agribusiness Capital.

- 1928Missionaries began preaching in southern Brazil in response to requests from German Church members.
- 1930sChurch services shifted to Portuguese after the government banned the use of German in public, and some German-language materials were destroyed.
- 1940The first Portuguese translation of the Book of Mormon was published.
- 1966The first stake in South America was created in São Paulo.
- 1978Hundreds of thousands of people began being baptized in Brazil from this year onward.
- 1993The Brazil Ribeirão Preto Mission was created from a division of the Brazil Campinas Mission and began on February 1.
- 2017The Brasília Brazil Temple, identified as Brazil's 10th temple, was announced on April 2.
