About the mission

The Brazil Rio de Janeiro North Mission began in 1993. In 2009, its headquarters moved to Vitória, and the mission was renamed the Brazil Vitória Mission.

Portuguese is the main language for missionaries and residents. Rio de Janeiro is Brazil’s second-largest city and a major cultural center on the Atlantic coast.

A short history of the area

The region around Rio de Janeiro was inhabited by Tupi, Puri, Botocudo, and Maxakalí peoples before European colonization. Portuguese explorers encountered Guanabara Bay on January 1, 1502. The Portuguese founded Rio de Janeiro on March 1, 1565, and named it São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro.

Rio became the colonial capital in 1763. In 1808, the Portuguese royal family moved there while fleeing Napoleon’s invasion of Portugal, making Rio the seat of the Portuguese royal court. Brazil’s capital moved to Brasília in 1960. Rio hosted the Summer Olympics and Paralympics in 2016.

  1. 1928Missionaries began preaching in southern Brazil after requests from German members living in the country.
  2. 1940The first Portuguese translation of the Book of Mormon was published.
  3. 1966The first stake in South America was created in São Paulo.
  4. 1968The Brazilian North Mission was organized, later becoming the Brazil Rio de Janeiro Mission.
  5. 1993The Brazil Rio de Janeiro North Mission began on February 1.
  6. 2009The mission headquarters moved to Vitória, and the mission was renamed the Brazil Vitória Mission.
