A short history of the area
The settlement became Vila de São Paulo in 1560, a city in 1711, and an Imperial City in 1822. Today, São Paulo is a major Portuguese-speaking city with more than 20 million people in its metropolitan area.

- 1928Missionaries began preaching in southern Brazil in response to requests from German members.
- 1935The Brazilian Mission was organized in São Paulo, with Rulon S. Howells as mission president.
- 1940The Portuguese translation of the Book of Mormon was first published.
- 1966The first stake in South America was created in São Paulo.
- 1978The first temple in South America was dedicated in São Paulo.
- 1991The São Paulo East and Interlagos missions were created as existing missions were divided.
- 2017The Brasília Brazil Temple was announced as Brazil’s 10th temple on April 2.
