A short history of the area
Teresina was built in a higher location because flooding affected the banks of the Parnaíba River. It is Brazil’s first planned city and the only northeastern capital located away from the Atlantic coast. The Poti and Parnaíba rivers meet at the northern end of the city.

- 1928Missionaries began preaching in southern Brazil in response to requests from German Church members living there.
- 1930sChurch services began to be held in Portuguese after the government banned the use of German in public.
- 1940The Portuguese translation of the Book of Mormon was first published.
- 1966The first stake in South America was created in São Paulo.
- 1978The first temple in South America was dedicated in São Paulo, 12 years after the first South American stake was created there.
- 2009The Brazil Teresina Mission was organized from portions of the Brazil Belém and Brazil Fortaleza Missions.
