A short history of the area

Archaeological evidence shows settlement in the Phnom Penh area since the 5th century AD. Tradition says Lady Penh founded the city in 1372 after finding sacred statues in a floating tree. She built a shrine on a hill that later became Wat Phnom, and the name Phnom Penh means “Penh’s hill” or “Penh’s mountain.”

Phnom Penh became Cambodia’s national capital after the fall of Angkor in 1434 and regained capital status in 1865. The Khmer Rouge evacuated the city in 1975, and people began returning after 1979.

4 March 1994The government of Cambodia granted legal recognition to the Church.
27 March 1994The first official Church meeting in Cambodia was held at the Hawaii Hotel in Phnom Penh.
9 May 1994Phal Mao, the first Cambodian convert, was baptized.
19 September 1994The Phnom Penh Branch was organized.
1996President Gordon B. Hinckley offered a dedicatory prayer on the banks of the Mekong River.
1997The Cambodia Phnom Penh Mission was organized in July.
2014Two stakes were created in Cambodia on the same day.
