About the mission

A short history of the area

Yaoundé began as a German trading outpost called Epsumb or Jeundo between the Nyong and Sanaga rivers. The settlement was later called Jaunde after the local Yaunde or Ewondo people. A German military garrison was established in 1895.

France selected Yaoundé as the capital of its Cameroon territory in 1922. It remained the seat of government when Cameroon became independent in 1960. Today, the city is known as La Ville aux Sept Collines, or the City of Seven Hills.

The Church here

  1. 1974The first sacrament meeting in Cameroon was held in Yaoundé on July 21 at the Hôtel de l’Unité.
  2. 1979Lucas and Marva Atem, citizens of Cameroon, were baptized in Leeds, England.
  3. 1981The Atem family returned to Cameroon.
  4. 1982Louis Joseph Beyina was baptized in Milan, Italy, and soon returned to Cameroon.
  5. 1991The first senior missionary couple serving in Cameroon arrived, and the Church submitted its request for legal recognition.
  6. 1992The Cameroon Yaoundé Mission was organized to administer Cameroon and nearby countries.
  7. 1993The government granted the Church legal status. The mission was relocated to Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
  8. 2009Elder Jeffrey R. Holland dedicated Cameroon for missionary work in Yaoundé.
