A short history of the area
The Canadian Pacific Railway reached Calgary on August 15, 1883. Calgary became a town in 1884 and a city in 1894. The city later became known for the Calgary Stampede, first held in 1912, and hosted the 1988 Olympic Winter Games.

- 1830Joseph Smith, Sr., and Don Carlos preached in several Canadian towns and hamlets north of the St. Lawrence River.
- 1883Simeon F. Allen and Heber S. Allen were the first known Latter-day Saints to enter what is now Alberta.
- 1910A few Latter-day Saint families arrived in Calgary.
- 1913The Calgary congregation was formed as a dependent branch.
- 1921The Calgary branch became an independent branch.
- 1923The Calgary Ward was formed.
- 1939The Calgary Ward built its first meetinghouse.
- 1953The first stake in Calgary was organized.
- 1974The mission name was changed to the Canada Calgary Mission.
