A short history of the area
Mindelo became a town in 1858 and a city in 1879. In 1884, a submarine communications cable connected Europe, Africa, India, and North America through the city. Today, Mindelo is Cape Verde's second most populous city and the largest city in the Barlavento Islands.
The Church here
- Late 1980sMany Cape Verdean Latter-day Saints were baptized in Portugal before returning to Cape Verde.
- 1989Missionaries arrived in Cape Verde, and Church meetings began in Praia. The Praia Branch was organized in June.
- 1991São Vicente was opened for the preaching of the gospel in May.
- November 1992A branch opened in Mindelo, and a district was organized in Cape Verde.
- 1993The Mindelo Cape Verde and Fogo Cape Verde districts were created.
- 2002The Cape Verde Praia Mission was announced on March 9 and began operating on July 1, including the Praia, Fogo, and Mindelo districts.
- 2018The announcement of a temple in Praia was celebrated on October 7.
- 2022The temple in Praia was dedicated.
- 2026The Cape Verde Mindelo Mission is scheduled to be created on July 1.
