A short history of the area
Praia officially became a city in 1858. Charles Darwin stopped there in 1832 during his voyage on HMS Beagle. Today, Praia is the political, economic, and cultural center of Cape Verde.

- 1980sMany Cape Verdeans living outside the country joined the Church in Portugal before returning to Cape Verde.
- March 1989The first missionaries arrived in Cape Verde and found a meeting place in the home of Policarpo and Ofelia Gomes in Praia.
- March 14, 1989The first convert was baptized in Cape Verde.
- June 27, 1989The Praia Branch was organized with approximately 25 members.
- November 1992A district was organized in Cape Verde.
- 1995Relief Society sisters in Praia provided clothing and food to 1,000 people displaced by volcanic eruptions on Fogo.
- 2002The Cape Verde Praia Mission was created.
- 2012The Praia Cape Verde Stake was organized.
- 2018The Praia Cape Verde Temple was announced on October 7.
- 2022The Praia Cape Verde Temple was dedicated.
