A short history of the area
The name Concepción is also used for places in many countries, including Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Peru, the Philippines, Spain, and the United States.
The Church here
- 1851–1852Elder Parley P. Pratt of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles served a mission in Chile.
- 1952Billie F. Fotheringham and his family moved to Chile, secured permission for missionaries to enter the country, and petitioned the Church to establish a mission.
- 1956Missionaries arrived in Chile, and the Santiago Branch was organized. The first baptisms were held on November 25, when nine people were baptized.
- 1959Chile and Peru became part of the new Andes Mission, headquartered in Lima.
- 1961The Chilean Mission was organized with 12 branches and 1,136 members.
- 1975The Chile Mission divided to create the Chile Concepcion Mission.
- 1983The first temple in Spanish-speaking South America was dedicated in Santiago.
- 2003The Chile Concepcion South Mission was created from the reorganization of the Concepcion, Osorno, and Santiago South missions.
