A short history of the area
Pedro de Valdivia founded Santiago del Nuevo Extremo on February 12, 1541, after arriving in the Mapocho Valley. The city was destroyed by Mapuche and Picunche forces later that year. Santiago became an important center during Chile's path to independence, including the First Government Junta in 1810 and the Battle of Maipú in 1818.

- 1959Chile and Peru became part of the new Andes Mission, headquartered in Lima.
- 1961The Chilean Mission was organized with 12 branches and 1,136 members.
- 1972The first stake in Chile was organized in Santiago.
- 1983The Santiago temple was dedicated.
- 1997The Chile Santiago East Mission was created from parts of three other Santiago missions.
- 2001Chilean Saints were among the first to participate in the Perpetual Education Fund.
