A short history of the area
Pedro de Valdivia founded Santiago del Nuevo Extremo on February 12, 1541. The city was destroyed by Mapuche and Picunche forces later that year, and Santiago became an important center during Chile's independence movement. The First Government Junta was proclaimed there in 1810, and the Battle of Maipú in 1818 helped secure independence.

- 1851–1852Elder Parley P. Pratt served a mission in Chile.
- 1952Billie F. Fotheringham and his family moved to Chile, secured permission for missionaries to enter the country, and petitioned the Church to establish a mission.
- 1956Missionaries arrived in Chile, and the Santiago Branch was organized.
- 1961The Chilean Mission was organized with 12 branches and 1,136 members.
- 1972The first stake in Chile was organized in Santiago.
- 1977The Santiago North Mission was organized.
- 1983The Santiago temple was dedicated.
- 2001Chilean Saints were among the first to participate in the Perpetual Education Fund.
- 2004The Church was recognized by the Chilean government for its efforts fighting poverty.
