A short history of the area
Pedro de Valdivia founded Santiago del Nuevo Extremo on February 12, 1541, near Huelén Hill, now called Santa Lucía. The city was destroyed during an attack on September 11, 1541, and later played a major role in Chile’s independence movement. The First Government Junta was proclaimed there in 1810.
The Church here
- 1851–1852Elder Parley P. Pratt of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles served a mission in Chile.
- 1952Billie F. Fotheringham and his family moved to Chile, helped secure permission for missionaries to enter, and petitioned the Church to establish a mission.
- 1956Missionaries arrived in Chile, and the Santiago Branch was organized. Later that year, the first six Chilean converts were baptized.
- 1961The Chilean Mission was organized, with A. Delbert Palmer as its mission president.
- 1983The Santiago temple was dedicated.
- 1995The Chile Santiago West Mission was organized as an additional mission in Santiago.
- 2001Chilean Saints were among the first to participate in the Perpetual Education Fund.
- 2004The Church was recognized by the Chilean government for its efforts fighting poverty.
