A short history of the area
The settlement became Santa Fe in 1540 and later served as the capital of the Viceroyalty of New Granada. After independence, Simón Bolívar renamed the city Bogotá to honor the Muisca people. Today, Bogotá is a large highland city known for its museums, libraries, theaters, bicycle paths, and cultural festivals.
The Church here
- 1966Elder Spencer W. Kimball dedicated Colombia for the preaching of the gospel and organized the first branch in the country.
- 1966Missionaries began preaching in Cali, Medellín, Pereira, and Bucaramanga within months of the first branch being organized.
- 1971A mission was organized in Colombia.
- 1977The first stake in Colombia was created in Bogotá.
- 1984Colombian Saints celebrated the announcement of the country’s first temple.
- 1992The Colombia Bogota Mission was renamed the Colombia Bogota North Mission when the Colombia Bogota South Mission was created.
- 1999The first temple announced in Colombia was dedicated, 15 years after its announcement. Saints participated in ordinances around the clock on its first day of operation.
- 2016Saints throughout Colombia marked 50 years of the Church in the country with service projects, blood drives, family history exhibitions, and interfaith dialogues.
- 2018The Barranquilla temple was dedicated.
