A short history of the area
Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada founded the settlement on August 6, 1538. Bogotá later became the seat of government of the New Kingdom of Granada and the capital of independent Gran Colombia in 1819. Today it is one of the world's highest large cities, with an average elevation of 2,640 meters.
The Church here
- 1966Elder Spencer W. Kimball dedicated Colombia for the preaching of the gospel and organized the first branch in the country.
- 1966Within months, missionaries began preaching in Cali, Medellín, Pereira, and Bucaramanga.
- 1971A mission was organized in Colombia.
- 1977The first stake in Colombia was created in Bogotá on January 23.
- 1984Colombian Saints celebrated the announcement of a temple in the country.
- 1992The Colombia Bogota South Mission was created on January 17 when the Colombia Bogota Mission was divided.
- 1999The first temple in Colombia was dedicated in April, 15 years after its announcement.
- 2016Saints throughout Colombia marked the Church's 50th anniversary with service projects, blood drives, family history exhibitions, and interfaith dialogues.
- 2018A second temple in Barranquilla was dedicated.
