About the mission

The Colorado Denver South Mission is based in the Denver area of Colorado, in the western United States. Denver is the state's capital and largest city.

Missionaries speak English and Spanish. Denver's dry, sunny climate includes four distinct seasons, with snow common from late fall through early spring.

A short history of the area

The greater Denver area was once inhabited by Apaches, Utes, Cheyennes, Comanches, and Arapahoes. Gold prospectors established Montana City along the South Platte River in 1858, but the settlement was abandoned the following summer. On November 22, 1858, William Larimer and Jonathan Cox staked a claim where the South Platte River meets Cherry Creek. Larimer named the town Denver City after James W. Denver, governor of Kansas Territory.

Denver was incorporated on November 7, 1861, after Colorado Territory was created earlier that year. Rail service connected Denver to the national railroad network in 1870. Denver became Colorado's permanent capital in 1881, and the consolidated City and County of Denver was established in 1902.

The Church here

  1. 1846A wagon train of 43 Church members camped at Fort Pueblo after its journey was postponed. By the end of the following winter, the camp had grown to 275 people.
  2. 1896The first Church mission in Colorado was established.
  3. 1897The first Colorado congregation was organized in Denver on January 3.
  4. 1909Missionaries campaigned against the growing number of saloons in Colorado.
  5. 1911The Mormon Tabernacle Choir toured Colorado.
  6. 1986The Denver Colorado Temple was completed, bringing increased public attention to the Church in Colorado.
  7. 1993The original Colorado mission was divided, creating the Colorado Denver South Mission and the Colorado Denver North Mission.
