About the mission

The Côte d’Ivoire Abidjan East Mission is based in Abidjan, the country’s largest city and economic center. The mission was organized in 1993.

French is the mission’s main language. French is widely used in Abidjan, along with local languages spoken in homes and communities.

A short history of the area

Abidjan began as a small Atchan fishing village. French colonists chose its current location in 1898 after leaving Grand-Bassam because of deadly yellow fever epidemics. Abidjan officially became a town in 1903.

Abidjan became the third capital of Côte d’Ivoire in 1934. After independence in 1960, it became the country’s administrative and economic center. Yamoussoukro became the political capital in 1983, while Abidjan remained the economic capital.

1980Philippe Assard joined the Church in Germany.
1987Côte d’Ivoire was dedicated for the preaching of the gospel, and the first baptisms in the country took place.
1993The Côte d’Ivoire Abidjan East Mission was organized.
1993More than 300 people attended Côte d’Ivoire’s first youth conference.
1997The first stake in Côte d’Ivoire was organized.
2004The Accra Ghana Temple was dedicated, giving Ivorian Saints a temple where they could make covenants.
2015President Thomas S. Monson announced plans for a temple in Abidjan.
2025Elder Ronald A. Rasband dedicated the Abidjan temple on May 25.
