About the mission

The Côte d’Ivoire Abidjan North Mission serves part of Côte d’Ivoire and officially opened on July 1, 2023. It was created from the Côte d’Ivoire Abidjan East Mission, with some areas from the Abidjan West Mission.

French is the mission language. Abidjan is Côte d’Ivoire’s largest city and its economic center.

A short history of the area

Abidjan began as a small Atchan fishing village. After deadly yellow fever epidemics in Grand-Bassam, French colonists chose the present location as a safer settlement in 1898. Abidjan became a town in 1903.

A deep-water canal completed in 1951 helped Abidjan become an important seaport. The city remained Côte d’Ivoire’s capital after independence in 1960. Yamoussoukro became the official political capital in 1983, while Abidjan remained the country’s economic capital.

1980Lucien Affoué joined the Church in France, and Philippe Assard joined the Church in Germany.
1987Côte d’Ivoire was dedicated for the preaching of the gospel, and the first baptisms in the country took place.
1989The first district in Côte d’Ivoire was organized in Abidjan.
1993The Côte d’Ivoire Abidjan Mission was organized.
1997The Abidjan Côte d’Ivoire Stake, the country’s first stake, was organized.
2005Norbert K. Ounleu became the first Ivorian to serve as a mission president.
2015President Thomas S. Monson announced that a temple would be built in Abidjan.
2023The Côte d’Ivoire Abidjan North Mission officially opened on July 1.
