About the mission

The Czech/Slovak Mission is based in Prague and serves the Czech and Slovak regions. Prague is the capital of the Czech Republic and a historic center of Central Europe.

Missionaries speak Czech and Slovak. These closely related languages share many words, although pronunciation and some vocabulary differ.

A short history of the area

People have lived in the Prague region since the Paleolithic age. Celtic and Germanic tribes lived there before Slavic settlement in the sixth century. According to legend, Prague was founded by the Czech duchess and prophetess Libuše and her husband, Přemysl.

Prague Castle began taking shape near the end of the ninth century. The city later became an archbishopric, home to Charles University, and the capital of the Czech Republic after the country separated from Slovakia in 1993.

The Church here

1884Thomas Biesinger arrived in Prague, was arrested for unauthorized preaching, and later baptized Anthon Just after nearly 70 days in prison.
1928Thomas Biesinger returned to Prague at age 84 and obtained legal recognition for the Church.
1929Czechoslovakia was dedicated for preaching the gospel, and the Czechoslovak Mission was organized on July 24 with Arthur Gaeth as president.
1950The government banned the Church from public activity and expelled foreign missionaries.
1990Missionaries returned to Czechoslovakia, and the Czechoslovakia Prague Mission was created.
1993The Czech Republic and Slovakia separated. At that time, there were 20 to 30 Church members in Slovakia.
2016The Prague Czech Republic Stake, the first stake in the Czech Republic, was created.
