A short history of the area
A hurricane destroyed the city in 1502, and Governor Nicolás de Ovando rebuilt it across the Ozama River. Santo Domingo later became the capital of the independent Dominican Republic in 1844. Today, its Colonial Zone is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

- 1978Dominican members who had joined the Church while living in the United States returned to the Dominican Republic, and missionaries arrived soon afterward.
