About the mission

The Ecuador Guayaquil East Mission is part of the Church’s work in Guayaquil, Ecuador. Guayaquil is the country’s largest city, main port, and economic capital. The city is home to four missions and many Church members.

Spanish is the language of the mission and the city. Missionaries and families will hear Spanish in homes, congregations, shops, and neighborhoods.

A short history of the area

Guayaquil’s official name is Santiago de Guayaquil. Spanish conqueror Francisco de Orellana founded the city at the location of a native village in 1538. After several location changes and fires, the city was definitively established in 1547.

Guayaquil declared independence from Spain on October 9, 1820, and became the Provincia Libre de Guayaquil. On July 26, 1822, José de San Martín and Simón Bolívar met in the city to discuss the completion of South America’s independence.

  1. 1965The first missionaries arrived in Ecuador on October 31.
  2. 1966Missionaries held the first sacrament meeting in Guayaquil in late January.
  3. 1970The Ecuador Mission was organized in Quito in August.
  4. 1978Ecuador’s first stake was organized in Guayaquil on June 4.
  5. 1982The First Presidency announced plans to build a temple in Guayaquil on March 31.
  6. 1999The Guayaquil Ecuador Temple was dedicated.
  7. 2020The Ecuador Guayaquil East Mission was organized.
