A short history of the area
Guayaquil declared independence from Spain on October 9, 1820. On July 26, 1822, José de San Martín and Simón Bolívar met there to discuss the completion of South America’s independence. Today, the city is known as La Perla del Pacífico, or “The Pearl of the Pacific.”
The Church here
- 1965The first missionaries arrived in Ecuador, after Elder Spencer W. Kimball directed the beginning of missionary work there.
- 1966Missionary work began in Guayaquil in January.
- 1970The Ecuador Mission was organized in Quito on August 1, with about 1,000 members in the country.
- 1978Ecuador’s first stake was organized in Guayaquil on June 4. A second mission in the country was organized in Guayaquil on July 1.
- 1980The Church published a Kichwa translation of selections from the Book of Mormon.
- 1991The Ecuador Guayaquil North Mission was created when the Ecuador Guayaquil Mission was divided.
- 1999The Guayaquil temple was dedicated. At that time, Ecuador had roughly 150,000 Latter-day Saints.
- 2018Ecuador had more than 300 congregations, with a Church presence in every major city and many rural areas.
