The Florida Fort Lauderdale Mission is based in southeast Florida and has included work across the Caribbean. Fort Lauderdale is the mission’s main city.

English and Spanish are spoken in the mission area. Spanish-speaking congregations have been an important part of Church growth in southern Florida.

A short history of the area

The area around Fort Lauderdale was inhabited for at least 2,000 years by Indigenous people associated with the Tequesta culture. In the 1830s, about 70 settlers lived along the New River in what was called the New River Settlement. A United States stockade named Fort Lauderdale was built in 1838 during the Second Seminole War.

The city was incorporated on March 27, 1911, and became the county seat of Broward County in 1915. Today, Fort Lauderdale is known for its waterways, beaches, marinas, and connection to the Atlantic coast.

The Church here

  1. 1897Florida’s first official Church congregation was created in Jefferson County.
  2. 1904Florida had 1,230 Church members.
  3. November 1, 1960The Florida Mission was created, including Florida, parts of Alabama and Georgia, and the Caribbean islands.
  4. July 1, 1971The Florida Southern Mission was organized, including southern Florida and the Caribbean islands.
  5. June 20, 1974The Florida Fort Lauderdale Mission was formed.
  6. 1978The Florida Fort Lauderdale Mission became important in teaching Spanish- and Creole-speaking people in southern Florida and taking the gospel to Caribbean islands.
  7. January 16, 1994The first Spanish-speaking stake in the Southeast was organized in Miami.
