A short history of the area
After Spain ceded Florida to the United States in 1821, settlers planned a town on the north side of Cow Ford. Jacksonville was founded on June 15, 1822, named for Andrew Jackson, and incorporated on February 9, 1832. In 1901, the Great Fire destroyed more than 2,000 buildings and left about 10,000 people homeless.

- 1845Phineas Young possibly served a two-month mission in Florida, becoming one of the first Latter-day Saint missionaries in the state.
- 1897Florida’s first official Church congregation was created in Jefferson County.
- 1898One Church congregational leader in Florida was murdered.
- Early 1900sLatter-day Saint missionaries came to Jacksonville and established a presence in the Riverside and Springfield areas.
- 1925Branches or Sunday Schools existed in Jacksonville and several other Florida communities.
- 1947The first stake in Florida and in the South was organized in Jacksonville on January 19.
- 1960The Florida Mission was created out of the Southern States Mission on November 1.
