About the mission

The Florida Tallahassee Mission is based in Tallahassee, the capital of Florida. Tallahassee is in the Florida Panhandle and the Big Bend region.

A short history of the area

Indigenous peoples lived in the Tallahassee area for thousands of years. The Apalachee town of Anhaica stood in the area, and Hernando de Soto’s expedition occupied it during the winter of 1539–1540.

Florida’s territorial government selected Tallahassee as the capital in 1824. The city was established in 1824 and incorporated in 1825. Today, Tallahassee is Florida’s capital, a college town, and the largest city in the Florida Big Bend and Florida Panhandle regions.

1845Phineas Young possibly served a two-month mission in Florida, becoming one of the state’s first Latter-day Saint missionaries.
1869–1929Law officers met trains arriving in Tallahassee and prevented Latter-day Saint elders from getting off.
1895Two elders were arrested and given the choice to leave or pay a $200 fine.
1897Florida’s first official Church congregation was created in Jefferson County.
1898One Church congregational leader was murdered.
1904Florida had 1,230 Church members.
1960The Florida Mission was organized from the Southern States Mission.
1971The Florida Tallahassee Mission and the Florida South Mission were formed from the Florida Mission on July 1.

Hernando de Soto’s encampment at Anhaica is often cited as the first place where Christmas was celebrated in the continental United States.
During the Civil War, Tallahassee was the only Confederate state capital east of the Mississippi River that Union forces did not capture or burn.
