About the mission

The France Paris South Mission is based in France, with Paris as its main city. France has two missions and a long history of Church activity dating to 1849.

A short history of the area

The Parisii, a Gallic tribe, lived in the Paris area from around the middle of the 3rd century BC. Julius Caesar conquered the Paris Basin in 52 BC, and the Romans established a settlement called Lutetia Parisiorum, meaning “Lutetia of the Parisii.”

Clovis the Frank made Paris the capital of the Merovingian dynasty in 508. Notre-Dame Cathedral began construction in 1163, and Paris became the center of the French Revolution when a crowd stormed the Bastille on July 14, 1789.

1849Missionaries first arrived in France, and the French Mission was organized.
December 1, 1850The first baptisms in Paris were performed, including the baptism of Louis A. Bertrand.
1849–1864Louis Bertrand, an early convert, led the French Mission until it closed in 1864.
1908Missionaries returned to France.
1960sChurch membership in France increased fivefold.
1975The first stake in France was organized in Paris.
2011President Thomas S. Monson announced the construction of the Paris France Temple.
May 2017The Paris France Temple was dedicated near Paris.
