A short history of the area
Hamburg later became a Free Imperial City in 1189 and joined with Lübeck in 1241 in an alliance regarded as the beginning of the Hanseatic League. Today, it is Germany’s second-largest city and a major port on the Elbe River.

- 1840Elder Orson Hyde wrote that there was a great work to be done in Germany.
- 1851Elder John Taylor, George P. Dykes, and George Viett organized a small branch in Hamburg.
- 1852The German edition of the Book of Mormon, translated by George P. Dykes and George Viett, was published.
- 1868Karl G. Maeser became president of the Swiss and German Mission, called local members as branch leaders, and began publishing Der Stern.
- 1938The East German Mission was organized and later became the Germany Hamburg Mission.
- 1961The Hamburg Germany Stake was organized, along with stakes in Berlin and Stuttgart.
- 1974The Germany Hamburg Mission was organized.
- 1990German reunification brought East and West Germany together.
- 2024The Germany Hamburg Mission reopened in July.
