About the mission

The Ghana Accra South Mission is based in Ghana, with Accra as its main city. Accra is a coastal capital on the Gulf of Guinea.

English and Twi are spoken in the mission. English is widely used in education, government, and business, while Twi is one of Ghana’s major local languages.

A short history of the area

Accra was settled in the 15th century and was ruled by the Kingdom of Accra from its capital at Ayawaso. The modern city grew around British Fort James, Dutch Fort Crêvecoeur, and Danish Fort Christiansborg.

The British captured Accra in 1874, and the city became the capital of the British Gold Coast in 1877. Ghana became independent in 1957, and Accra remains the country’s capital and a major coastal city.

The Church here

  1. 1960sSeveral Ghanaians read the Book of Mormon, gained testimonies, and petitioned Church leaders to organize branches in Ghana.
  2. 1960sLocal believers, including R. A. F. Mensah, J. W. B. Johnson, and Rebecca Mould, established independent congregations while awaiting official Church branches.
  3. 1978President Spencer W. Kimball received a revelation extending priesthood ordination to all worthy men and directed that missionaries be sent to Ghana.
  4. 1978Hundreds of believers were baptized, branches were organized, and a mission was established.
  5. 1989–90The government banned the activities of several religious organizations, including the Church.
  6. 1998President Gordon B. Hinckley visited Ghana and announced that a temple would be built in Accra.
  7. 2004The Accra Ghana Temple was dedicated.
