A short history of the area
Akwamuhene Ansa Sasraku attacked Accra in 1677 and burned Osu and Small Accra in 1681. The British captured Accra in 1874, and it became the capital of the Gold Coast in 1877. Accra became Ghana’s capital when the country gained independence in 1957.
The Church here
- 1960sGhanaians who read the Book of Mormon gained testimonies and began asking Church leaders to organize branches in Ghana.
- 1969R. A. F. Mensah, J. W. B. Johnson, and others registered their congregations with the government as The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon Church) Ghana Mission.
- 1978President Spencer W. Kimball received a revelation extending priesthood ordination to all worthy men and directed that missionaries be sent to Ghana.
- 1978The first missionaries arrived, more than 400 people were baptized within a year, and branches were organized.
- 1980The Africa West Mission was organized with Ghana and Nigeria in its boundaries.
- 1985The Ghana Accra Mission was organized from the Africa West Mission.
- 1989–90The government banned Church activities for about 18 months. Members continued worshipping in their homes.
- 1991The first two stakes in Ghana were organized in Accra and Cape Coast.
- 2013A second mission in Accra, the Ghana Accra West Mission, was organized.
