About the mission

The Ghana Cape Coast Mission includes the western half of Ghana, as well as Togo, Benin, Cameroon, and the Central African Republic. Cape Coast is the mission's main city and an important historic center on Ghana's coast.

English and Twi are spoken in the mission area. Cape Coast is also known by its traditional name, Oguaa.

A short history of the area

Cape Coast was founded in 1482 and grew from the market settlement of Oguaa, a name from the Guan Awutu word “Gua,” meaning “market.” The settlement became the principal town of the Fetu Kingdom. Portuguese navigators called it Cabo Corso, meaning “short cape,” a name later changed to Cape Coast.

Cape Coast served as the capital of the Gold Coast from 1821 to 1877, when the capital moved to Accra. The city is home to Cape Coast Castle, a World Heritage Site, and the University of Cape Coast. It celebrates Fetu Afahye on the first Saturday of September each year.

  1. 1960sGhanaians who had read the Book of Mormon and gained testimonies petitioned Church leaders to organize branches in Ghana.
  2. 1978President Spencer W. Kimball received a revelation extending priesthood ordination to all worthy men and directed that missionaries be sent to Ghana.
  3. December 5, 1978The first missionaries, couples Edwin and Janath Cannon and Rendell and Rachel Mabey, arrived in Ghana.
  4. December 9, 1978Edwin Cannon and Rendell Mabey performed the first 125 baptisms in Ghana near Cape Coast.
  5. December 10, 1978The Cape Coast Branch was organized with J. W. B. Johnson as branch president.
  6. 1991The first stakes in Ghana were organized in Accra and Cape Coast.
  7. 1998President Gordon B. Hinckley announced that a temple would be built in Accra, the first temple in West Africa.
  8. 2004The Accra Ghana Temple was dedicated.
  9. July 1, 2005The Ghana Cape Coast Mission was organized, covering western Ghana, Togo, Benin, Cameroon, and the Central African Republic.
