A short history of the area

Antigua is home to a longstanding Latter-day Saint community. Local members saw their congregation grow from a small branch meeting in a rented hall to a larger community with a dedicated chapel.

A local Church member served first as branch president and later as the first bishop of the congregation while raising five children. The chapel's walkway roof was built with his carpentry work and was dedicated in 1984.

1942John F. O'Donnal moved to Guatemala and foresaw a time when the gospel would be preached to the country's native peoples.
After World War IIJohn F. O'Donnal petitioned President George Albert Smith to send missionaries to Guatemala.
1956Missionaries began studying Mayan languages.
By 1962More than 10,000 Guatemalan Latter-day Saints lived in the cities and highlands.
1984Saints filled 11 dedicatory sessions for the Guatemala City Guatemala Temple.
July 1, 2019The Guatemala Antigua Mission was organized.
