About the mission

The Guatemala Cobán/Belize Mission serves the Cobán region, including Alta Verapaz, Baja Verapaz, Petén, and Belize. Cobán is the mission's main city.

Spanish is the mission's listed language. The region is also home to Mayan language communities, including the Q'eqchi' and Poqomchi' peoples.

A short history of the area

Cobán is the capital of the department of Alta Verapaz in central Guatemala. It is the main city connected with this mission.

The wider mission region includes Alta Verapaz, Baja Verapaz, Petén, and Belize. Northern Guatemala and Belize have long been important areas for Church members traveling to worship in the Guatemala City temple.

  1. 1942John F. O'Donnal moved to Guatemala and foresaw a day when the gospel would be preached to the country's native peoples.
  2. After World War IIJohn F. O'Donnal petitioned President George Albert Smith to send missionaries to Guatemala.
  3. 1956Missionaries began to study Mayan languages.
  4. By 1962More than 10,000 Guatemalan Latter-day Saints lived in the cities and highlands.
  5. 1979The Church organized its first two branches in the Poqomchi' homeland, in Tac-Tic and Tucuru/Panchilha.
  6. 1984Saints filled 11 dedicatory sessions for the Guatemala City Guatemala Temple.
  7. 2013The Guatemala Cobán Mission was created.
  8. 2024Elder Dale G. Renlund dedicated the Cobán Guatemala Temple on June 9.
