A short history of the area
The name Georgetown is also used for places in several other countries. George in South Africa and Janjanbureh in Gambia were formerly known as Georgetown, while Es Castell in Minorca, Spain, was originally called Georgetown.
The Church here
- September 1988Missionaries held the first sacrament meeting in Guyana. The Majid Abdulla family, baptized previously in Canada, attended.
- February 1989The Church gained recognition in Guyana.
- March 1989A small branch was organized in Georgetown, with about 23 people in attendance.
- March 1991Additional missionaries were sent to Guyana, and branch membership soon grew to more than 100 members.
- Later in 1991Guyana became part of the newly created Trinidad Tobago Mission.
- End of 1993Guyana had about 270 members.
- 1996Membership had grown to about 500, and another branch was organized.
