A short history of the area
The city later grew through transportation and trade. A railroad connected San Pedro Sula with Puerto Cortés between 1869 and 1874, and the banana trade helped the city develop in the late 1800s. Today it is known as La Capital Industrial and is the largest city in Central America that is not a national capital.

- Early 1950sElders Spencer W. Kimball and Marion G. Romney visited Honduras to evaluate prospects for Church work.
- Early 1950sThe visiting apostles left Church literature with a hotel waiter who was later baptized.
- December 1952Missionaries arrived in Honduras.
- March 1953Missionaries baptized the first converts and organized the first congregation.
- 1954Missionary work began in San Pedro Sula on October 4.
- 1955A branch was organized in San Pedro Sula.
