A short history of the area
Tegucigalpa became the permanent capital of Honduras on October 30, 1880. In 1937, Tegucigalpa and Comayagüela were merged politically into the Central District. The two cities are separated by the Choluteca River.

- 1952President Juan Manuel Gálvez granted permission for missionary work to begin in Honduras.
- 1952The Central American Mission was opened, and Central America was dedicated for the preaching of the gospel.
- 1952James T. Thorup and George W. Allen became the first missionaries to serve in Honduras.
- 1953José Santos Ortega Flores, Alicia Castañeda, Antonieta Dávila Mendoza de Chahín, Corina Bustamante, and Corina's young daughter were baptized in the Humuya River on March 21.
- 1953The first congregation in Honduras was organized in Tegucigalpa the day after the first baptismal service.
- 1977The first stake in Honduras was created in San Pedro Sula on April 10.
