A short history of the area

David Thompson explored the area from 1807 to 1809 and established Kullyspell House on nearby Lake Pend Oreille. In 1878, General William Tecumseh Sherman established Fort Sherman on the north shore of Lake Coeur d'Alene. The Northern Pacific Railroad arrived in 1883, helping make the village a transfer point for ore from the mining district.

Coeur d'Alene became a town on August 22, 1887, and a city on September 4, 1906. Timber, mining, tourism, and North Idaho College have all shaped the community. Today, the city sits beside Lake Coeur d'Alene and is known for its lakefront setting and outdoor recreation.

1855Church President Brigham Young asked 26 early Church members to settle among Native Americans on the Salmon River.
June 1855The settlers established Fort Lemhi.
1858The Fort Lemhi settlers left after problems with Native Americans.
1860Latter-day Saint settlers came to the Franklin area.
1879Construction of the Utah Northern Railroad brought settlement to the upper Snake River Valley.
1888Ricks Academy was founded in Idaho.
1890Idaho received statehood. Latter-day Saints made up about one-fifth of the state's population.
2001Ricks College became a four-year university and was renamed Brigham Young University-Idaho.
